Warning lights follow a simple colour code. Red means stop as soon as it's safe. Amber means get it checked soon. Green or blue are just information.
Red lights: stop when safe
- Oil pressure (oil can): stop and switch off. Driving on can destroy the engine.
- Engine temperature (thermometer): the engine is overheating. Stop and let it cool before checking coolant.
- Brake warning (circle with "!"): could be low brake fluid or a brake fault. Get it checked before driving further.
- Battery: the charging system has a fault and the car may cut out soon.
Amber lights: book a check
- Engine management (engine outline): a fault has been stored. If it flashes, reduce speed and get it checked straight away.
- ABS: normal brakes still work, but anti-lock won't. It is an MOT fail.
- Tyre pressure: one or more tyres is low. Check and inflate.
- Glow plug / DPF (diesels): often cleared by a longer drive, but persistent lights need attention.
We'll tell you what it means
Our diagnostics read the fault codes and find the real cause, so you only pay to fix what's actually wrong. We'll explain it in plain English before any work starts.
